How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are various pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When I start the engine without sparks i put tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I think the issue is read more elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car can start when the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is connected, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. 3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about fuel injector timing etc. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when you're in gear. 5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of issues with your vehicle. The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer.
