How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are various connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor.
